We are seeking a results-oriented professional to join our growing team! The General Counsel is responsible for leading corporate strategic & tactical legal initiatives. This role offers sound legal advice on Company strategy & implementation; manages the legal function; and obtains & oversees the work of outside counsel as needed.
Experience & Education
Advanced law degree (e.g. JD or LLB)
Member in good standing of California State Bar.
Meets local legal license requirements.
Minimum 3 years commercial legal experience (law firm or in-house).
Ability to develop collaborative relationship with internal partners and external customers, with comfort interacting with high-level executives.
Experience negotiating & drafting of outbound contracts.
Payments background is a plus!
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
Work with Business Development, Sales, and Marketing teams on providing support around new/evolving business opportunities.
Coordinate, review and negotiate technology licensing agreements, partnering agreements, and other corporate contracts.
Support corporate governance initiatives.
Escalate issues, as appropriate, to investors & partners collaboratively to identify issues and share potential concerns.
Provide expert & strategic legal advice to senior management.
Negotiate & advise on contracts, new business ventures, and transactional matters.
Conduct complex legal research.
Identify & assess legal and business risks of current operations & processes.
Develop process improvements, policies & procedures by collaborating with senior management & owners.
Act as a key advisor for various legal issues.
Concurrently work on multiple legal issues & projects for various client organizations.
Skills & Qualifications
Experience drafting & negotiating various types of commercial agreements.
Well-developed practical legal & business knowledge.
Strong negotiation & advisory skills.
Ability to develop legal strategy & objectives.
Ability to translate complex legal matters into plain language communication.
Anticipate issues & estimate risks strategically.
Ability to independently solicit information and input from different stakeholders as necessary.
Ability to flourish in a fast-paced, start-up environment and successfully manage aggressive deadlines with minimal supervision.
High degree of professional ethics & integrity.
Excellent judgment & analytical skills.
Payments experience is preferred.
Strong contract negotiation skills.
