| To engage in civil and administrative litigation and support attorneys by providing legal advice and assistance on a broad range of issues related to the advocacy of animal protection and animal rights. Legal Fellow Remote Location: Norfolk, VA Job type: Full time Salary range:$50,000.00 - $69,305.60 Annually Primary Responsibilities and Duties: Assist with all phases of civil and administrative litigation in both state and federal courts. Responsibilities may include legal research, drafting complaints, managing written discovery, reviewing documents, participating in depositions, handling motion practice, preparing for trial, and engaging in oral advocacy—all in support of efforts to promote animal protection and animal rights. Contribute to amicus efforts and collaborate with others to develop and advance litigation strategies aligned with broader animal advocacy goals. Work closely with internal and external legal counsel to pursue litigation objectives in a cost-effective manner. Research, interpret, and apply relevant local, state, and federal statutes, regulations, and case law, with an emphasis on legal issues affecting animals and advocacy campaigns. Provide legal support to caseworkers, researchers, and campaign staff on a wide range of issues. Offer legal guidance and opinions to various departments regarding initiatives that highlight and publicize legal work related to animal rights advocacy. Perform additional duties as assigned by a supervisor. Requirements: Juris Doctor (J.D.) and no more than three years of experience in civil litigation. Background or interest in areas such as animal law, administrative law, First Amendment, media law, open records/FOIA, or environmental law is preferred but not required. Active membership in good standing with at least one state bar association. Excellent legal research and writing skills. Willingness and ability to travel as needed. Alignment with the mission and philosophy of animal rights advocacy and the ability to professionally represent those positions.
